Stephen's 2009 Trip
Day 02 - 7/28/2009
Cleveland, OH
Day Highlights
- Woke up at 7:00, I cursed, then I went back to bed.
I got up at 8:00.
Koup wouldn't let me go back to bed
I had breakfast in room (my food)
I noticed I actually have a nice view of Lake Erie:
- ~10:15 Walked to Free Stamp
- Walked to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Had to leave camera in coat check, but I got off some shots of the lobby
- The Rock and Roll Hall of fame has 6 levels.
The first thing I encountered on the lowest level
was a tribute to the pioneers. There was a wall with pictures and
also head phones where you could listen to music. I listened to
some songs.
One song in particular was from Robert Johnson. He only
recorded 29 songs in 1936 and 1937.
Another song was Pete Seger's 1962 recording of "Turn, Turn, Turn"
which I thought sounded better than the Byrds 1965 version
In another section there was an interactive screen where you could pick a
Hall of Famer and it would list who the hall of famer said influenced them
and it played their music.
In a number of displays were note books with lyrics from song
writers. Billy Joel's notebook on "We didn't start the fire" (which was
originally titled Joline) was very interesting to see his cross outs.
On the 4th level was a tribute to Pink Floyd's The Wall.
There was a 30 foot wall of white bricks, like the album,
and it had writing that was a frankly honest confession on dealing
with fame which led to the writing of the song. Hmmmm.
The 5th and 6th levels are set up as a single exhibit on
Bruce Springsteen. This is the first exhibit on such a large
scale. His early notebooks were full of scribbles
and his later notebooks are almost written as brain dumps with
no cross outs...either he now copies the final version or
he's gotten that good!
I was suprised to see his Oscar for best song for Philadelphia.
After going through all 6 levels I returned to the 3rd level
and had lunch...a nice piece of Salmon with Rice and Veggies.
Then I swung by the Gift Shop before heading out. I got a
mug with Bruce Springsteen on it.
- After exiting the Hall of Fame...
Outside the Hall of Fame was Johny Cash's Tour Bus...black of course...
Then I walked back to the room for my afternoon snack and to
figure out what to do next
- I decided to walk back to the waterfront and say my goodbyes to
Lake Erie!
- Dinner in hotel: Salad, Grilled Swordfish, Grilled Asparagus, Baked Potato...yum!
